WORLD REACTION TO SYRIA’S DOWNING

The downing of the Turkish aircraft by Syria in the international waters has made ramifications across the world.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation has strongly condemned the incident, qualifying it as a serious threat to regional security and stability. The organization's Extraordinary Executive Committee has also condemned the Damascus administration's increased acts of violence targeting the Syrian people and has recommended that Syria's membership of the organization be suspended.

Australia has decided to introduce new sanctions against the Al Assad regime. The new sanctions geared to ratchet up pressure on Syria to abide by the UN peace plan involves the areas of oil, finance, telecommunication and precious metals.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has qualified the incident as brazen and unacceptable and said close cooperation with Turkey will continue.

China has called for moderation and a statement made by Beijing said the situation in the region was alread very delicate and complicated and expressed the hope the sides would act with calm and try to find a solution through diplomatic channels.

In the meantime, Russia is reported to provide technical support to the Syrian army and the missile system to have struck the Turkish aircraft is also reported to be Russian made. Russian President Putin will most likely make a statement today on the circulating reports.
